The Perfect Father’s Day Gift

quiltingWhile we often think of quilts as something we can give our mothers for birthdays, holidays, or other such events, people shouldn’t forget that their fathers would also enjoy a gift to hang on the family quilt rack. Quilts, after all, are always a meaningful gift, and they are the perfect option for this coming Father’s Day. They also make a nice gesture because they can be used for many years, which means they will be a part of your father’s home and life for a long time.

The thing to remember when giving a quilt as a gift is that quilts are often very personal gifts. As such, make sure that the quilt you select in some way reflects the interests or preferences of your dad. This can be in terms of color scheme or the images displayed on the quilt itself. You could also look into a custom quilt option. This way, you can ensure the quilt is exactly what your day wants.

Love at First Sound

quilt-rackI met my husband eight years ago at a music festival in Tennessee. At the time, we were both huge fans of the rock band Phish, and we bonded over that fact after a few mutual friends introduced us. Even though common pop cultural tastes seldom guarantee a love match, we started dating immediately and tied the knot a few months later. Now that we’ve both transitioned into parenthood and have focused more on our professional lives, those early days seem so distant.

I decided to surprise my husband by commemorating the day we first met. First I raided his closet for old Phish T-shirts - he seemed to have one from every single concert they did in the late ’90s. Then I sent the shirts to a professional who in turn assembled a memory quilt. My husband was thrilled with the gift, and it has served as a great conversation piece, hanging from the wooden quilt rack in the family den.

Clean Coffeemakers Mean Great-Tasting Coffee

mr-coffee-coffee-makerCoffeemakers are a man’s true best friend, especially in the early morning hours when sleep is the dominant theme on one’s mind. It’s so easy to take that delicious, invigorating cup of joe for granted that we often forget to keep a coffeemaker clean. That’s why it can come as such a surprise when the crisp flavor begins to diminish and the finished product suffers.

A Mr Coffee coffee maker should be cleaned regularly – ideally once a week to inhibit the growth of mold and to break apart the buildup of coffee oil residue. Depending on how much use you get out of the machine, you might want to use more than just water and mild dish soap. If you’re noticing a buildup of calcium inside the machinery, it could be a sign of hard water. In that case, you’ll want to use vinegar or some specialized cleaning agent.

Send Those Pesky Mice Packing

Television shows often portray household pests as lovable, cuddly creatures, but most homeowners know that those depictions are inaccurate. Cartoons like “Tom and Jerry” conveniently leave out the aspects of mice’s behavior that makes them undesirable roommates. They scrounge for food, contaminating it with germs. They leave their droppings all over the floor and cupboards. In short, they’ve got to go.

In order to evict freeloading mice and other pesky vermin, you’ll need to up the ante from a technological standpoint. Mouse traps are inhumane and ultimately ineffective. You might ensnare a few rodents with the lure of peanut butter or cheese, but eventually the others will learn from their comrades’ mistakes. An electronic pest repeller emits ultrasonic frequencies that are intolerable for a mouse or rat. Mice will be sent scurrying far, far away, and you’ll be able to return to a pest-free life.

smoothieNow that summer has passed the halfway mark, it’s time to reevaluate your list of seasonal plans. Have you been out to the lake with your fishing boat? If you answered no that that last question, the remedy is quite simple – and tasty. Just follow this recipe and you’ll be relaxing in style and good health.

Don’t Discard the Landline Just Yet

It’s growing increasingly common for households to be without a landline, but that total reliance on cell phones can be a bit problematic. There is something to be said for being free from another phone bill, but what happens if your cell phone malfunctions, as they are apt to do sometimes? What happens if you’re out of minutes and you want to make a call that you know is going to be lengthy? In these instances, a landline can be a real lifesaver.

Plus, there are so many bundled packages today that most people will add a landline just because it actually makes their overall bill cheaper, or at least comparable. If that’s the case, make sure that your phone is a cordless. In this way, you’ll have all the mobility offered by a cell phone but with the reliability of a landline. Also make sure that you choose a home phone that is a brand you trust. Whether you choose a Motorola cordless phone or a Panasonic cordless phone, make sure that you know and trust the brand before purchasing.

Finding the Right Alarm Clock For You

alarm

There are so many products in our day that help us function, and we hardly even think about them. One of these types of products is the alarm clock. Where would we be without our alarm clock? We would certainly never be to work on time, and we might miss special occasions and events like parties, doctor visits, and other important appointments. But not every alarm clock is created equal. Finding the perfect clock means searching through the available selection and picking the model that suits your needs.

To that end, when your latest alarm clock finally kicks the bucket, pick your new one with care. Make sure that the numbers are easy for you to read, and make sure the interface is intuitive for you. (After all, you will be trying to turn this thing on and off when you’re still groggy with sleep.) But the most important feature with alarm clocks is the alarm itself. Make sure it has a tone, beep, or radio call that will work for you. Some people need a blaring horn, while others just need a bit of noise to rouse. Pick a clock with the appropriate noise for you.
